“No bond is deeper than the one forged in the same childhood dust.”

— P. B. McKenzie

James wanted a quiet life after the crucifixion.

He and his wife, Roda, would return to their workshop, mend what was broken, and let the city move on.

Jerusalem had other plans.

In the days after Jesus’s death, rumours move through the streets like sparks on dry grass—an empty tomb, impossible stories, familiar faces disappearing into back rooms. And slowly, quietly, people begin finding their way to James and Roda’s door.

Some arrive grieving. Some arrive terrified. All of them are looking for a place where they won’t be turned away.

The refuge they offer draws notice. And notice draws trouble.

Temple officials start watching the house. Scribes take down names. Raids ripple through the neighbourhood without warning. Even Matthias—the scribe assigned to observe James—starts faltering under the weight of what his reports are being used to justify.

A short visit from Paul of Tarsus only tightens the scrutiny, convincing the authorities that something larger is taking shape.

Then the sweeps begin.

Families vanish overnight. Fear seeps into every corner of the city. And James, who never wanted followers and never trusted his own faith, finds himself standing where no one else will—speaking in the open, knowing every word will be written down.

Roda stays at his side, steady as ever, holding together the home that has become a lifeline for so many.

Becoming James is the thrilling story of a marriage that anchors a community, of ordinary people caught between empire and hope, and of a reluctant man who discovers that sometimes doubt is what leads you to courage. Inspired by the true story of James, brother of Jesus.

Born from Loss. Driven by Purpose.

I’m drawn to the stories history leaves in its margins. Becoming James grew out of my fascination with James—the brother of Jesus—whose doubt, grief, and reluctant courage shaped a community history rarely centers. Alongside him stands Roda, a fierce, resilient woman whose strength steadies him even as the world around them grows more dangerous. This is, of course, filled with historical truths—real dates, real figures from the biblical and historical record, and a few imagined voices needed to bring the world fully alive. Together, James and Roda navigate the rising threat of the high priesthood and face the choices that will define their legacy. It’s a blend of political tension and intimate psychological struggle. A story grounded in real events but driven by human stakes rather than doctrine, written for both the faith-curious and the faith-found. At its heart, this book is about ordinary people asked to do something extraordinary. Roda’s quiet power and James’s uncertain courage are the threads that pulled me through the writing. And I hope they’re the ones that stay with you long after the final page.

Key Characters

James and the key people who orbit his life are revealed here. showing how love, fear, loyalty, and danger shape the path he’s forced to walk.

James

The brother of Jesus. A cautious craftsman shaped by doubt and grief. A man who never imagined he could carry anyone. He rose from coward to reluctant leader even as danger closed in around him. Guided by a quiet, tender strength that surfaced only after his world fell apart. In finding his courage, he comes to see that faith isn’t having every answer. It’s the quiet resolve to keep moving even when the path remains unclear. That resolve would one day cost him his life. yet it also defined the legacy he never sought to leave behind.

Roda

A steady, fierce-hearted woman who anchors James long before he understands his own strength. She carries her grief without bending, stepping into danger with a calm resolve that makes her a quiet force shaping the road they walk together. In a world built to silence women, she becomes the voice that steadies him—and the strength that refuses to disappear.

Marcus

A Roman tax collector torn between duty and a growing unease with the injustice he’s expected to ignore. Bound by a debt he intends to repay, he secretly feeds inside information to the early Christian community, risking everything to balance a ledger that has nothing to do with money.

Ananus

A calculating Temple priest who treats every rising movement as a threat to the fragile order he is sworn to control. He believes only ruthless vigilance can keep Jerusalem from collapsing into chaos. Convincing himself that every harsh act is necessary to protect the people and the power he inherited. Haunted by the fear of being outmaneuvered, he presses on the smallest weakness until it breaks—because in his world, mercy is the first step toward losing everything.

Malachi

Malachi is a quiet, watchful boy shaped by loss long before he understands its weight. Rescued after his parents’ deaths, he finds in James and Roda a safety and belonging he thought he had lost forever. As he grows, he becomes a thoughtful, steady young man who carries compassion like a calling, choosing courage not from duty but from the love that rebuilt him.

As someone who is faith curious, I was grateful for a story that explored belief with honesty and heart, without slipping into dogma.
