Becoming James grew out of my fascination with James—the brother of Jesus—whose doubt, grief, and reluctant courage shaped a community history rarely centers. Alongside him stands Roda, a fierce, resilient woman whose strength steadies him even as the world around them grows more dangerous. This is, of course, filled with historical truths—real dates, real figures from the biblical and historical record, and a few imagined voices needed to bring the world fully alive. Together, James and Roda navigate the rising threat of the high priesthood and face the choices that will define their legacy. It’s a blend of political tension and intimate psychological struggle. A story grounded in real events but driven by human stakes rather than doctrine, written for both the faith-curious and the faith-found. At its heart, this book is about ordinary people asked to do something extraordinary. Roda’s quiet power and James’s uncertain courage are the threads that pulled me through the writing.
